Media language little mix and the vamps

Explain one way that music videos use media language to differ from one another. Refer to one example of contrasting language in two media videos you have studied to support your answer (4) In Little mix's 'Black magic', at the beginning of the video the band are in oversized jumpers and baggy trousers to represent themselves as 'geeks'. This challenges the conventions of pop due to normally at the beginning of music videos, the artist(s)are in highly sexualised and revealing outfits to be a fashion icon for girls of that age. On the other hand, in The vamps 'somebody to you', the girls are introduced and presented wearing bikinis. This ,unlike the beginning of 'black magic', conforms to the conventions of pop, due to girls admiring their figures and little outfits, due to them gaining male attention. It also conforms to the stereotype that only skinny pretty girls can attract male attention.

How far do you agree that the two videos you have studied are conventional for the genre?

How far do you agree that the two videos you have studied are conventional for the genre? From viewing Little mix's music video 'Black Magic' it is evident to see many pop conventions. An example of this is the bright lighting. The effect of bright lighting attracts attention and gives the video a fun vibe. This conforms to the convention of pop, due to pop being all about having fun and enjoying yourself. Another pop convention seen in 'Black Magic' is the camera shots. Within the video they use lots of long shots. I think they do this in order to look at the outlook of the location as well as the costumes they are wearing, in this video very revealing clothing due to them having the representation of 'popular girls'. The effect of this is to give the audience both personal identity, due to them identifying with the location due to it being in high school and so 12-19 year olds can relate to it, due to the diverse and variety of cast, blac...

Music Videos Theoretical language

Music videos theoretical language Language Representation Audience Contexts-social and cultural Artists may feature other artists in their videos in order to gain more views and be recognised by the featured artists fans, and so they will become fans of them both.  The audiences are the same, and yet the videos are so different in order to teach young audiences different morals, not the same kind of ones over and over again.   Black magic  Somebody to you

Representation

Representation Star image A stars image becomes a readily recognised sign that is used in many different media forms. Stars can use the fact that their image has meaning by allowing it to be used for advertising purposes. A pop star is a manufactured image and does not correlate to person's personality behind the image. Somebody to you representations The group of girls- The group of girls appear to be at the age of 16-18. Their costumes are very revealing, they are mostly wearing bikinis throughout the video, if not short revealing clothes. All the girls appear to be white, there is no diversity or ethnic equality. These girls could offend girls of different shapes and sizes, due to the girls being inclusive, due to them all being skinny and of the same shape and colour, this could make people of different ethnicity, shape or culture feel they won't be able to get another boys attention if they don't look like a typical pretty girl, this conforms to t...

Audience and set texts

Audience and set texts Audience's today   consume   music videos for   uses and  gratifications . This could stem from them receiving   entertainment , filling time and taking them   out of the real world.   Information   could be taken from the videos if they reflect the world. As well as that, Active audiences may take  personal identity  from the video,  identifying with the star , whether that may be their attitude, behaviour or fashion sense. It could be   personal relationships . This could be just making conversation between friends, or   building a relationship  with the star. This occurs when following their social media, buying their products or watching their shows. Male gaze theory- ALL media products are made for heterosexual males. Women costumes are often tighter, shorter and more revealing. For example this advert is for men, a an is clothed and w...

Coldplay Paradise Home learning

The conventions featured in this video, paradise, consist of a linear narrative, their is a story behind the video, in this case an elephant is on a journey through paradise in order to find his friends. As well as that the video also includes a contrasting setting, as the setting is in the elephants 'paradise' which links to the theme of the song. There is use of mise-en-scene, the elephant costume denotes a fancy dress costume but may connote a real life elephant in order for us to feel connected to the video. The props used such as the unicycle creates an abstract and fun vibe for the viewers and keeps us entertained. The shots and cuts are speedy and abstract with matches the piece, and creates that sense of realism. Paradise is both a performance and conceptual, due to them acting throughout the video and them basing the idea of the video around the word 'paradise'. It is a pop music video due to the technical conven...

Intertextuality

Intertextuality   Intertextuality - When media texts make reference to another pre existing text. Identify 3 bands which are 'mocked' in the video. Backstreet boys, brittany spears and Christina Aguilera. Why was the video so popular with audiences? link to genre. Its targeting people who grew up with those artists. The whole time, all he does is mock artists, its comical. There are fast pace cuts which keeps the audience engaged. Why might it be good for institutions? Might be better for the other institutions as they will go and watch the original version if they haven't already. Item 1                                    Item 2 1964 Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.     Hey Ya-Outkast music video Intertextuality- They are in a similar formation and on the same kind of stage and set up. Editing of music videos

Editing of music videos Editing Through the most common form of editing associated with the music promo is fast cut   montage , which makes many of the images impossible to grasp on first viewing (thus ensuring multiple viewing), there are videos which use slow pace and gentler transitions to establish mood . This is particularly apparent for the work of many female solo artists with a broad audience appeal, such as adele.  How many shots there in a music video? Between 1 and hundreds of shots. How long do you think the average shot length is for a music video? between 0.3 to 5 seconds. How would the length of a music video/sequence within a music video affect the audience? The montage editing is really quick and therefore entices viewers to keep watching it. It benefits the artist by them getting a lot of views as well promoting them as an artist. 1. The genre of this m...
