What is the function and type of regulation in the magazine industry? (IPSO)  The independent Press Standards Organisation is the independent regulator for the newspaper and magazine industry in the uk.  They hold newspapers and magazines to account for their actions, protect individual rights, uphold high standards of journalism and help maintain freedom of expression for the press.  IPSO make sure magazines and newspapers follow the editors code and investigate complaints about material that may breach the editors code. they provide advice for editors and journalists, operate a 24 hour service for an anti harassment line and work with charities and organisations to support and improve press standards.  The website offers information such as what they do, consisting of how they are funded and how they are run. Magazine Revenue

Magazine revenue  How are magazines funded commercially  Magazines receive revenue from: circulation, how may copies they make (cover price for £5.50 for MOJO) advertising (in MOJO, mostly live or recorded, with some fashion advertising, appealing to the rock neesh genre) mass advertising  cross promotion (when a company uses their platform to promote their platform) sponsored content and product placement, for example, 'MOJO listens to all its music on Roksan equipment'  How do they use different funding models to generate income? The print industry is suffering from falling advertising revenues and falling circulations as many of their audience go online.  Their response has been to diversify as mush as possible-events are a good example of this- and to move magazines online. Sponsored content and product placement, for example, 'MOJO...

Magazine Ownership & NRS

Magazine Ownership & NRS The magazine industry is mostly owned by publishing companies, rather than the very large media conglomerates such as disney, amazon and Netflix that dominate film and tv media worldwide.  Most magazines are struggling in a competitive market so this media from, print, may be managed by owners who specialise in the print medium.  However, magazine publishing is globalised, like other media, with the most popular magazine brandish the hands of a few international companies.  NRS: National Readership Survey Collator for the magazines, collet all the data.

Front Cover Analysis

How far is media language used differently in one of the extracts f rom M ojo and we love pop magazines to refle ct genre conventions? In your answer you must - analyse examples of how media language is used differently in the extracts - make judgements and reach conclusions about whether there are more similarities due to genre contentions that differences in the extracts. (15)     extract 1                                           extract 2 One way media language is used differently in both extracts is through the use of colour. In extract 1, the colours are bright and bold, their is a variety of all different colours. This could connote life and fun within the genre, conforming to the usual stereotype of pop being a fun and exciting part of the industry. On the other hand, extract 2 differs to extract 1, although there is a s...

MOJO Representations

Mojo representations Stereotypes and Change in gender roles One stereotypical representation used is that rock music only appeals to predominately white males. This magazine conforms to this stereotype by including way more males then females within the article, as well as lack of ethnic groups as the magazine is predominantly white. I think this stereotype has been used to appeal to the niche readers in order to have loyal fans and more viewers as the stereotypical fans of this rock genre can identify with the magazine. The fact that they include an image of a women on the front cover conveys they don't want to alienate women completely, which is a countertop auto showmen are usually presented, as they are usually highly sexualised within the media or seen to be at home cooking, not usually on the cover of a rock magazine. Due to the picture of the women being smaller than the men featured could connote that men h...

MOJO Industries and Representations

MOJO Industries and Representations  How many people are in MOJO: Men:311 Female:73 Ethnic minorities:73 Loyal fans are male and so the magazine appeals more to men. This is an unfair representation due to their being way more men than female. As well as that their are may more white people then any other ethnic group. This conforms to the stereotype of white men listening to rock, rather then women. How may different audiences interpret the magazine differently and how may these differences reflect individual and social differences? A black man may interpret the magazine in a different way to a white man due to the magazine mainly only presented white men. This may make the black man not be able to identify with the magazine although he likes rock music and feel as though he cannot be part of the rock community due to this lack of diverse. As well as that, a girl may interpr...

MOJO Media Language

MOJO Media Language  1.A magazine front cover usually consists of a masthead, the name of the publication, in this example MOJO, they placed MOJO in a clear space on the front page in a bold font in order to increase brand recognition and catch the readers eye. The main image has to be the biggest and most eye catching picture in order to entice the reader into reading the magazine as well as give them an idea of what the magazine is about as well as the genre, in this case is an image of John Lydon, placed on the centre of the magazine to convey who the main focus of the magazine is going to based on, it eyecatches the readers and gives them an idea of what the magazine is going to be based on. The main article has to be the boldest statement on the front cover to show the readers what the main article is going to be about. In this example, Sex Pistols is in bold across the centre of the magazine foreshadowing what the main article is go...

'Black magic' they base it in a high school which is where everyone grew up and where teenagers go now, they can relate to the setting. As well as that, in 'Somebody to you', it is based on a beach, which is where teenagers love to hang out and it sets a relaxing and chilled vibe, this appeals to the target audience of 12-18, as its their  reality.  Explain one way in which music video use media language to represent the artists . Media language little mix and the vamps

Explain one way that music videos use media language to differ from one another. Refer to one example of contrasting language in two media videos you have studied to support your answer (4) In Little mix's 'Black magic', at the beginning of the video the band are in oversized jumpers and baggy trousers to represent themselves as 'geeks'. This challenges the conventions of pop due to normally at the beginning of music videos, the artist(s)are in highly sexualised and revealing outfits to be a fashion icon for girls of that age. On the other hand, in The vamps 'somebody to you', the girls are introduced and presented wearing bikinis. This ,unlike the beginning of 'black magic', conforms to the conventions of pop, due to girls admiring their figures and little outfits, due to them gaining male attention. It also conforms to the stereotype that only skinny pretty girls can attract male attention.

How far do you agree that the two videos you have studied are conventional for the genre?

How far do you agree that the two videos you have studied are conventional for the genre? From viewing Little mix's music video 'Black Magic' it is evident to see many pop conventions. An example of this is the bright lighting. The effect of bright lighting attracts attention and gives the video a fun vibe. This conforms to the convention of pop, due to pop being all about having fun and enjoying yourself. Another pop convention seen in 'Black Magic' is the camera shots. Within the video they use lots of long shots. I think they do this in order to look at the outlook of the location as well as the costumes they are wearing, in this video very revealing clothing due to them having the representation of 'popular girls'. The effect of this is to give the audience both personal identity, due to them identifying with the location due to it being in high school and so 12-19 year olds can relate to it, due to the diverse and variety of cast, blac...

Music Videos Theoretical language

Music videos theoretical language Language Representation Audience Contexts-social and cultural Artists may feature other artists in their videos in order to gain more views and be recognised by the featured artists fans, and so they will become fans of them both.  The audiences are the same, and yet the videos are so different in order to teach young audiences different morals, not the same kind of ones over and over again.   Black magic  Somebody to you

Representation

Representation Star image A stars image becomes a readily recognised sign that is used in many different media forms. Stars can use the fact that their image has meaning by allowing it to be used for advertising purposes. A pop star is a manufactured image and does not correlate to person's personality behind the image. Somebody to you representations The group of girls- The group of girls appear to be at the age of 16-18. Their costumes are very revealing, they are mostly wearing bikinis throughout the video, if not short revealing clothes. All the girls appear to be white, there is no diversity or ethnic equality. These girls could offend girls of different shapes and sizes, due to the girls being inclusive, due to them all being skinny and of the same shape and colour, this could make people of different ethnicity, shape or culture feel they won't be able to get another boys attention if they don't look like a typical pretty girl, this conforms to t...
