MOJO Media Language
1.A magazine front cover usually consists of a masthead, the name of the publication, in this example MOJO, they placed MOJO in a clear space on the front page in a bold font in order to increase brand recognition and catch the readers eye. The main image has to be the biggest and most eye catching picture in order to entice the reader into reading the magazine as well as give them an idea of what the magazine is about as well as the genre, in this case is an image of John Lydon, placed on the centre of the magazine to convey who the main focus of the magazine is going to based on, it eyecatches the readers and gives them an idea of what the magazine is going to be based on. The main article has to be the boldest statement on the front cover to show the readers what the main article is going to be about. In this example, Sex Pistols is in bold across the centre of the magazine foreshadowing what the main article is going to be about, it is normally eye catching in order to convince the readers to pick it up and buy it. Cover lines on the front cover provide teasers as to what is going to be inside the magazine. In this mojo magazine they provide a variety of cover liens in order to convey the variation of artists consisting within the magazine.
2. The colour scheme of the magazine consists of a pop of colour. This creates meaning by it connoting energy, youthness and brightness within the rock industry. It is a countertype of a typical rock magazine as usually the colours that represents rock artists are black and grey, this shows this magazine is not just aimed for the stereotypical rock fan, is is aimed for anyone interested in reading about the industry. The facial expression of the main image, also shows the serious side of rock music due to his serious facial expression, conforming to the stereotype of rock music having no meaning due to the lack of expression on his face. The font is very bold and makes the cover stand out. This could connote the bold statements all rock artists try to express in their music. The fact the main image is a mid shot focuses on his emotion and body language shows this serious person he is being presented as. It has a rather clustered lay out as there is alot going on connoting again like the colour scheme, informality and energy.
3. i answered this in question 1 and 2. The serious expression and body language of the main image does relate to the genre as it is known as having no meaning. The name of the band being Sex pistols also relates to the genre due to the rock genre being represented as 'sex, drugs and rock and roll'. On the other hand the pop of colour, the pink and yellow does not relate to the genre due to the genre usually being presented by wearing all dark colours. The bold fonts do relate to the genre due to rock music being seen as a bold genre. The clustered layout does relate to the genre due to rock being seen as rather manic.
4. The language used on the front cover is in mode of address. I think they use this language in order to make a personal connection to their target audience. Rock fans are stereotypically seen as aggressive and violent, meaning they would not enjoy reading formal language, they are presented to like bold statements.
5. A way intertextuality is used to create meaning is the quote 'There was to much to cope with...'. This creates meaning due to the readers understanding the lives of these artists and their reality. It may warm to them more due to knowing the people they actually are, not just what they are seen as by the media.
Really excellent - your analysis has improved SO much.
