How far do you agree that the two videos you have studied are conventional for the genre?
From viewing Little mix's music video 'Black Magic' it is evident to see many pop conventions. An example of this is the bright lighting. The effect of bright lighting attracts attention and gives the video a fun vibe. This conforms to the convention of pop, due to pop being all about having fun and enjoying yourself. Another pop convention seen in 'Black Magic' is the camera shots. Within the video they use lots of long shots. I think they do this in order to look at the outlook of the location as well as the costumes they are wearing, in this video very revealing clothing due to them having the representation of 'popular girls'. The effect of this is to give the audience both personal identity, due to them identifying with the location due to it being in high school and so 12-19 year olds can relate to it, due to the diverse and variety of cast, black, white asian, geek and popular all the cliques in high school. The effect of the costume could be sexual gratification, due to the clothes being very revealing and so men watching it for that reason. As well as that it could be for personal identity due to the teens watching it finding the stars as a model of behaviour and aspire to be like them, and will want to start dressing like them, which is what pop music aspire to do, inspire the audience with a performance.
Additionally, within the Vamps' music video 'somebody to you' The Mise-en-scene reflects the atmosphere which is conventional to pop music. An example of this is the setting. It is set on a beach. The effects the audience due to it being a fun and relaxing setting where people enjoy, the target audience, 14-22, will be able to relate to this setting due to the younger generation going their in order to have fun, just like they are in this video.
Overall, i would agree that the two music videos discussed above are conventional to the genre of Pop. Many conventions, mise-en-scene, camera shots, lighting and setting reinforce the message that Pop music portrays joy, fun, happiness and it is all modernised in order for the audience to relate.
